**Material Master Data** is the foundation for **Material Requirements Planning (MRP)** in planeus.

:::hint{type="warning"}
Regardless of how the lot size is set in the Technology – currently, the quantities in the BOM are based on **a lot size of 1**.
:::

Based on the production plan, **MRP** in planeus estimates prior to the production:

- what materials will be needed,
- in what quantities,
- and when they will be required.

It helps solve the problem of limited visibility or lack of production readiness that often leads to missing materials, production delays, and inefficiencies, while also providing detailed insight into exactly which planned step will require which material to improve upcoming coordination and plannability.

# Where to find Materials?

You can create and manage all your materials by clicking into **Master Data > Material Master Data**.

# Importing Material Data

You can also import material data using the Data Import feature.

Be sure to use the template called “**Material**” for the correct format.

# Creating Materials

Materials can be added as **Bill of Materials (BOM)** linked to Technologies.

## Creating a Bill of Materials

- For each Technology in the **Article Master Data**, you can build a BOM.

- To manually add a material:
 1. Select the material from the gray area at the top of the BOM form.
 2. Click the **plus (+) icon** to add it to the list.
 3. Click **Save** at the bottom of the form to confirm your changes.

Whenever you edit a BOM, don’t forget to save the changes **in the Article **itself too!
:::

## Importing BOMs

- You can import a BOM directly from the BOM form.
- Click the **Import icon** to start the process.

When you import BOM items:
The materials are also automatically added to the Material Master Data if they are not exist yet.
:::

## How Material Requirements Are Calculated

planeus calculates material needs like this:

- It looks at the **Articles and quantities** in your scheduled Order Items.
- The **start date** of each Work Step becomes the required date for the material.
 - If a BOM item isn’t linked to a specific Work Step, planeus uses the start date of the first Work Step instead.
- Completed Work Steps from production orders are **not included** in material requirements calculations.

## [Material Requirement Planning](docId\:Cm_m9K_6T_RNpdbZhlSgH)

planeus offers at least 2 helpful reports for MRP:

- **Material Requirement – Single View**
 - Goes into detailed step-level and shows point-of-use requirements
- **Arranged Material Requirement**
 - Summarizes material demand across a selected time period.
